1Defective productJan 31, 2010
By Brendan F. Hug "bamako_boy2"
The "word of warning" noted in another review should not be taken lightly. Shortly after receiving this product, it began to show small cracks towards the bottom, which became larger and larger. Thinking this was a fluke - I returned it, and got a replacement. Unfortunately, the cracks began to appear again. The cracks are not just a cosmetic problem - when they start to appear, the salt mill stops working properly. For the price of this product, it should not have so many problems - our cheap plastic mill that is sold at Trader Joe's works better!

1Defective ProductApr 27, 2011
By AGH
I purchased this item while visiting a friend out of state so I was unable to return it to the store. If I had known what an ordeal this would be I never would have purchased it. I bought matching salt and pepper mills.

After four months of average use the salt mill cracked on the bottom. I immediately contacted Peugeot. Peugeot's customer service was horrible. The woman on the phone accused me of dropping it because she said she has never heard of any of their mills breaking. I told her that there were several reviews online stating this exact issue and she still claimed that she had never heard of this the entire time she worked at Peugeot.

She then told me that I would have to pay to ship the product to their business and they would asses whether it would be repaired. If it was determined the break was my fault it would not be repaired. If the product was determined to be defective it would take at least a month for it to be returned to me. For the price this is ridiculous. I will not be purchasing any Peugeot products in the future. At this point, my salt mill is useless. The crack is large and the salt mill no longer works properly.

4A Word of CautionNov 28, 2009
By Steven J. Woodyatt "Steve-Oh"
Absolutely love the grinders (I have both Salt and Pepper). However, I did make the mistake of setting the salt grinder on a wet cutting board and the combination of salt on the wood and wetness caused the bottom adjustment ring to crack clean through. I can not adjust the grind at this point. Doesn't mean I won't buy another one.

5Best millApr 26, 2009
By R. Maitlen
This is the best saltmill I have ever owned or used. It's very sturdy and should hold up well for many years. The best feature about this mill is the ability to choose the courseness of the grind by rotating the base rather than turning the screw at the top. Mills that only allow adjustment by the top screw are a pain because the grind always seems to come out of adjustment. It looks and works great. Word of warning. I was originally shipped a Peugeot mill that was identical except that it wasn't a u-select, meaning you couldn't adjust the grind at the base. Amazon customer service was great and sent me the right mill. But be sure you get the u-select and not an older or cheaper model.

5TAKE SOME TIME TO AVOID DISSAPOINTMENTJan 22, 2012
By SPARTY 047
The unfinished bottom of these mills "might" wick up moisture from a damp surface which could cause wood joinery seams to fail. To avoid this possibility, take a few minutes to apply a modest coating of cooking oil to seal the wood. Peugeot makes a wonderful grinding mechanism that should perform flawlessly for you for many years.

Update 2/12: Why use a salt grinder? Because very finely ground sea salt seems to add more flavor than a much larger amount of salt crystals IMHO. Also, sealing the bare wood seems to have done the trick without affecting function one whit. Now if we don't drop it on the floor as someone else recounted, it should last a lonnng time. BTW - Caution: This item qualifies for super saver shipping. Be sure to change from the default shipping setting before finalizing your transaction! Join me in encouraging Amazon to set super saver shipping as the default choice, to avoid the appearance of a deceptive practice of inserting undesired shipping charges for what should be an "upgrade" option.
