My new little helperAug 22, 2007

I used to have the rotary nutmeg grinder. I paid around $25 for it. The output was so-so, it leaked in my cabinet and you had to make sure the nut was placed in the chamber just right. The handle broke after about three years.
No more! I love this product from Microplane. I have the smaller Microplane rasp spice grater as well, but I wanted this one because it allows me to store the nuts with the grinder. (That's how I ended up falling for the expensive rotary grinder.) The output is fine. A good feature is that you can grate enough to spoon from the container if you need it for larger recipes. I think it grates finer than the other rasp spice grater.
The product is easy to clean -- unsnap everything and throw it into the dishwasher.
This is not a must-have product, but it is one of those little conveniences that makes cooking so much easier. If you don't already have a grinder, purchase this one. If you already have a grinder, wait until it breaks.

Love This Grater!Dec 27, 2009
By Katawampas Microplane makes the best graters and this little gadget is no exception. It stores the nutmeg in the black area and grates in to the clear box. You get perfect little gratings of nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom, etc. This is the second one I've owned. The first one developed a crack along the edge and the blade was starting to get dull after about 6 years of use. We use a lot of nutmeg so it was used frequently.
It can go in the dishwasher with no problem.
Out of the box, I had a little trouble snapping it together but if you carefully push the wide end down first and work your way forward while gently pushing, it will snap together. After a few uses, it's much easier to snap apart and back together.

Great for Nutmeg, So-so for CinnamonFeb 01, 2009

I own 2 of these great little Microplane graters. One for freshly ground nutmeg and the other for freshly ground cinnamon. I love it for both. The comment that the product is overly-complicated may be true, but only because the pieces fit very tightly together out-of-the-box. After a while it becomes easier to open the various compartments.
As I said in the title of this review, I find the grater to work great with nutmeg (almost too good, since I end up grating more than I need). I guess that I should take advantage of the clear bottom and what how much I've grated. As for cinnamon, it seems to take a lot longer to grate than nutmeg, because the cinnamon bark is much harder than a nutmeg. So, for one I get too much, while the other I seem to get too little, but the effort is still very much worth the effort.
I would not recommend this for anyone who needs a lot of freshly ground cinnamon. But, other than that, it is a great product. Definitely 5-stars!

One sweet tool.. function, ease & storage in one place. BRAVO!!!Mar 30, 2009

With the old microplane I had to get a bowl dirty to catch the gratings. I also had to deal with the microplane being in my drawer getting scuffed, dulled, and causing a possible hand injury.
This new little contraption is genius!!!! It stores nuts, it provides a nice small microplane, and it store any unused grated nutmeg! Look at it this way, in one little container you have everything you need to have fresh nutmeg. ALSO, the blades are protected from damage and stay sharper longer.
I love mine so much that I bought two others to give as gifts!!!

MicroPlane Grate and ShakeMay 16, 2010
By Elnora F Riggs This handy little item seems to be useful for storing and grating whole nutmeg or stick cinnamon. It holds about three or four nutmegs or several sticks of cinnamon depending on their size. I wouldn't recommend it for storing fresh ginger but it appears that it would do a good job of grating fresh ginger.
