4Best value going... $50 at Costco!May 26, 2010
Just got these at Costco after returning a set of Henckels knives whose rivets were coming out. I was going to just replace them with another set of Henckels, but the Anolon knives were $50, compared to $170 for the Henckels. I had nothing to lose, so I bought the Anolon knives.

Having used the Henckels for over a year, I can say that these Anolon knives seem to be every bit as good, and in some ways better. The grips are very comfortable, and the chef's knife is heftier and better balanced than the 8" Henckels one.

I left off one star because I found the steak knives to be a bit light for my taste, and I find their handles a bit short. They work fine, but i think they need a slightly longer handle with a more distinct boundary between the blade and handle.

All in all, an excellent set, and an unbeatable value if you can still grab them at Costco for $50!

4Decent set for the price, but "made in china" with "german steel"Nov 10, 2009
This is a decent knife set for a relatively reasonable price. Fairly sharp out of the box, sharpener included, as well as reasonable amount of different knifes. That being said I would have liked to see fewer steak knifes and maybe one medium-sized knife; most of the ones in the set are either small or large, not much in-between.

All the knifes we've used (everything but the bread so far) cut well, though not quite "like butter" with some things as you might expect. Try cutting a large sweet potato! I think that's a general problem of almost any knife though.

In terms of build, they're pretty solid with reasonable but not great heft. Balance seems decent. We have a higher-end (but older) set at the chef school where I work and they're quite a bit heavier and thicker, which I'm actually not sure I like. The one thing I do question about the "build" is they say "German steel", but then are "made in China". It says this right on the blade. I'm sure quality products are made in China too, but the reputation of Chinese products is that they're cheap and poorly made, so it doesn't inspire confidence to see that on there. Still, from what I've seen so far they are decent, if not excellently constructed.

Only time will tell how they'll wear, but so far after about a month of use they're doing fine. One steak knife got some tiny tarnish/rust spots in one spot on the blade, perhaps from not being dried properly after washing. A few quick swipes of the included sharpener got rid of them and they haven't been back. So as long as you properly care of these, they should be fine. This seems to be common to most of the mid-range, and of course high-end knife sets around - to hold an edge they need a mix of metals that can be prone to rust. So that's just par for the course.

Overall I'm fairly satisfied and I can say I "like" this set (4 stars), but really I'd give it 3.5 if I could - "like but not entirely sure it's worth the price". I still can't help wondering if some of the other slightly cheaper sets on Amazon wouldn't have been as good or better...

5Outstanding valueNov 06, 2009
I've scoured the web for quality forged knives at a good price and this is one of the best deals currently available. My buddy bought a Calphalon knife set for over $200 and when I showed him mine he nearly had a heart attack. The sharpness, heft, fit and finish are practically indistinguishable, and I got mine for $130 shipped. As is to be expected in any large numbered set, there are some redundant knives included: I see no real need for the 8" slicer or the 5" serrated. However, you DO want a santoku, bread knife, parer, shears and steak knives, and to accumulate these individually (with a quality wood block) would surely exceed $150 assuming forged German steel.
